Visas
There
are several different types of visas, which you can apply for, and the
main thing to keep in mind concerning them is determination. Italian
red tape is famous, and everything always takes longer than it’s
supposed to.
Visas
vary from Elective Residence (prove that you’re rich enough to
never work again and you can live in Italy), to Work (have an Italian
employer fill out a bunch of paperwork for you while you’re still
in the States), to Student (provide bank statements, and documentation
of programs to be followed), to Family (fill out paperwork showing that
you are joining family whom already have appropriate visas).
Below
is current (summer 2004) information on some of these visas. Requirements
change, and most visas include a clause stating that any additional
requests at the time of filing your paper work must be adhered to as
well. For the most current policies, check with the Italian embassy.
If you want to receive the best results for your time and energy, go
to the closest consulate in person, rather than dealing with issues
over the phone or by mail. Things will get done for you much faster
this way.
