Hotels
& Short-Term Apartments
While
there are plenty of luxury hotels, you’ll be happy to know that
there are a lot of inexpensive options in Italy, as well. One star,
and even no star hotels can be perfectly accommodating, and hostels
are located throughout the country. Religious institutes have opened
up hotels as a way to make additional money, and can be very high in
quality, although they may also have additional rules concerning curfews,
or non-staying guests entering the hotel rooms. Short term tourist apartments
are also available all over the country.
In
Italy the star system is enforced. Hotels are ranked not simply by the
quality of their rooms, but also by the extent of their facilities.
For this reason you can find less expensive hotels which are very comfortable
because their grounds don’t include additions such as a restaurant
and bar.
Breakfast
is generally included in rates, even for one and two star hotels. The
simplest version of this is fresh bread or brioches, with coffee or
hot chocolate. Feel free to decline additional meal options, since Italy
is full of quality restaurants and bars.
Expect hotel rooms to be small, due to the density of the country and
Italians’ ability to maximize space. One and two star hotels may
be in old buildings with loud plumbing, and no lounge room. Service
as Americans are accustomed to is famously lacking in all departments
in Italy, including expensive hotels.
Be
sure to book well in advance, especially if you’re arriving in
peak tourist season, as hotels fill up. If you have special requests,
or a famous hotel in mind, book even farther in advance.
